As a young man, Katsushika Hokusai became a woodcutter, engraving the designs of local painters. Three years later, he put an end to this in order to become an artist himself. In 1800-1805, he adopted the formal lessons of Western art and soon became a celebrated artist, attracting a large number of followers. Hokusai was one of the most highly valued artists of his time. He was very popular among the public and was highly influential in Japan as well as in the West.
